CHANGE AGENT
The self-described, “unsigned Seattle indie-jazz band”
Jubilee is taking a unique approach to fighting the global slave
and forced-child-prostitution industries: playing music and giving
away money.
“The reason we've had time to enjoy music is that we've
been blessed. We think there's enough to go around — so we're enjoying
and extending the blessing,” says Curtis Romjue, Jubilee's guitar
and word-slinger. "When
I learned there are more slaves now than the 400 years of the African
slave trade combined, a light-switch went on in my head." An
estimate from Understanding Global Slavery puts the worldwide figure
at 27 million slaves, with 100,000-150,000 in the USA.
Jubilee sends
10% of their booking fees and 50% of all merchandise sales to the
International Justice Mission — a nonprofit providing lawyers to
fight for justice around the world."We love what we do! Music
makes our lives better, and we hope it can improve the lives of others."
